Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai - 625 015 is one among the several educational and philanthropic institutions founded by Late Thiru Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar. Our revered founder, along with his family members, was responsible for the rapid development of this socially relevant institution of higher learning.
          It is the ardent desire of the founders of the institution that the students coming out of it will be individuals of the highest calibre, both intellecutual and moral, and of outstanding ability, endowed with a missionary zeal to fulfil the aspirations of their countrymen.
        The college was founded on 26th June 1958 with the active support and financial assistance of the Government of India as well as the Government of Tamil Nadu. The college is recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education - AICTE and is affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai.
        The College is now under the management of Dr. Thirumathi Radha Thiagarajan as Chairman and Thiru. Karumuttu T. Kannan as Correspondent.
 
About the Founder

The Founder Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, son of Thiru Muthukkaruppan Chettiar and Thirumathi Sivakami Achi, was born on 16th June 1893 at A.Thekkur in Pasumpon Muthuramalingam District of TamilNadu. Educated at St. Thomas College, SriLanka, he edited a newspaper championing the cause of the plantation workers. After his return to India he started Meenakshi Mills, Madurai in 1925. He took an active part in the struggle for Indian Independence. Thiagarajar founded 14 textile mills, 19 educational institutios, the Bank of Madura and the Madurai Insurance Company. He also published for a number of years a daily called "Tamil Nadu". He was an ardent lover of architecutre, music and literature. This great philanthropist used a large part of his wealth for the development of higher education. Leaving behind a rich legacy, Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar passed away on 29th July 1974.

1957-58 Pre-Engineering started in Thiagarajar College, Madurai.
1957-59 Affiliation granted by the University of Madras for starting B.E. Degree Courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engg (Pre-Engineering followed by 4 year BE Degree Course) Classes began on 20th June, 1958 in the present campus
1959-60 Five-Year BE Integrated Degree Course Introduced
1966-67 Three-Year BE Degree Course (in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engg.) for B.Sc. Degree holders introduced. This course was discontinued from 1968-69.
1966-67 On bifurcation of the University of Madras, the college was affiliated to the newly formed Madurai University. The name of Madurai University was changed to Madurai Kamaraj University in 1978-79.
1968-69 Subject Unit System introduced for BE Degree Course.
1969-70 The college was recognised by the Madurai University as a centre for research leading to the Ph.D. Degree in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
1971-72 Part-time BE Degree Course of seven semesters duration for Diploma holders in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering introduced.
M.Sc(Engg) Degree course in Structural Engineering, both full-time and part-time, introduced. The name of this degree was changed to ME Degree in 1978-79.
1972-73 The college was recognised by the Madurai University as centre for research leading to the Ph.D. Degree in Civil Engg. and Electrical Engg.
1973-74 B.Sc (Applied Sciences) Degree Course of six semesters duration introduced.
1975-76 Thiagarajar Engieering and Managament Consultancy Services started.
1976-77 Semester System introduced for B.E. Degree Course.
1978-79 B.E Degree Course in Electronics and Communications Engineering introduced.
M.Sc Degree in Applied Mathematics course introduced.
1980-81 B.E. Degree Course of five years duration reduced to four years
1985-86 B.E. Degree Course in Computer Science and Engineering introduced.
M.C.A. (Master of Computer Application) Degree Course of six semesters duration introduced.
1986-87 M.E. Degree course in Industrial Engineering and M.Sc Degree course in Applied Chemistry introduced.
1987-88 Autonomous status conferred on the College by the Madurai Kamaraj University.
1995-96 B.Arch Degree Course introduced.
M.E. Degree course in Communications Systems full-time 3 semesters duration introduced.
